Several members of the NFL Physicians Society (NFLPS) were honored at the 2015 American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) annual meeting this past weekend. Those NFLPS members recognized were: Washington Redskins Doctor James R. Andrews, MD; Pittsburgh Steelers Dr. James P. Bradley, MD; St Louis Rams Drs. Robert H. Brophy, MD and Rick Wright, MD; and Seattle Seahawks Drs. Jonathan A. Drezner, MD and Ashwin L. Rao, MD.
James R. Andrews, MD, team orthopedic surgeon for the Washington Redskins, and past president of AOSSM, was inducted into the AOSSM Hall of Fame. In 2001, AOSSM established the Hall of Fame to honor members of the orthopaedic sports medicine community who have contributed significantly to the specialty and set themselves apart. Being inducted into the Hall of Fame is one of the highest honors given to a Society member. Nominations for the Hall of Fame are submitted by AOSSM members and then selected by the Hall of Fame committee. Recipients received an award plaque, special presentation at the AOSSM Annual Meeting, and their photographs are on the AOSSM Hall of Fame display.
James P. Bradley, MD, former NFLPS President and head team orthopedic surgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers received the Systematic Review Award for Posterior Instability of the Shoulder: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Clinical Outcomes. All systematic review papers are considered, and the award is determined by the editors of The American Journal of Sports Medicine. This award was established to encourage submission of high-quality systematic review papers, which add to the current knowledge of sports medicine. The winners of the Systematic Review Award receive $5,000 and a plaque.
Jonathan A. Drezner, MD and Ashwin L. Rao, MD, team physicians for the Seattle Seahawks received the T. David Sisk Awards For Research Excellence: Best Review Paper Evaluation and Management of Wolff-Parkinson-White in Athletes. The T. David Sisk Research Awards were established in 2010 to honor the best papers submitted to Sports Health in clinical, laboratory, and international research. The winners receive a $2,500 cash prize and a plaque.
Robert H. Brophy, MD and Rick W. Wright, MD, team physicians for the St. Louis Rams received the Cabaud Memorial Award for Transcriptomic Signatures of Meniscal Tears and Articular Cartilage from Knees Undergoing Arthroscopic Partial Meniscectomy Show Evidence for Early Osteoarthritis. Established in 1986, The Cabaud Memorial Award is given annually to the best manuscript submitted that pertains to hard or soft tissue biology, in vitro research, laboratory or “bench-type” research, or in vivo animal research.
“It is a proud day for the NFLPS. Our colleagues, who were given several prestigious awards by the AOSSM, are outstanding physicians in their fields. We are delighted they are being publicly recognized for their hard work and achievements by their peers,” said Robert A. Heyer, MD, president of the NFLPS and Carolina Panthers’ team physician.
