Becker’s Spine Review named 52 of the best surgeons for excellence in orthopedics. Amongst the 52, eight are NFL Physicians Society (NFLPS) members including Asheesh Bedi, M.D., James Bradley, M.D., Frank Cammisa, M.D., Daniel Cooper, M.D, Bryan Kelly, M.D., President of the NFLPS, Matthew Matava, M.D., Matthew Provencher, M.D., and Russell Warren, M.D.
Becker’s Spine Review compiled the list by asking readers to nominate outstanding orthopedic surgeons.
Asheesh Bedi, M.D., Dr. Bedi is a team physician for the Detroit Lions. Additionally, Dr. Bedi is the Harold and Helen W. Gehring Early Career Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and an assistant sports medicine and shoulder surgery professor at the University of Michigan and MedSport program. He is also a consultant for the NFL and NHL Players Association.
Dr. Bedi was recommended anonymously, “Dr. Bedi is much younger surgeon, but really the most prolific sports medicine researcher. He is a great sports medicine physician specializing in hip and knee arthroscopy.”
James Bradley, M.D., Dr. Bradley is the co-head team physician for the Pittsburgh Steelers and a recent recipient of the Jerry Hawk Rhea Award from the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society (PFATS). In addition, Dr. Bradley practices at Burke & Bradley Orthopedics and is a clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Dr. Bradley was recommended anonymously, “He is really one of the world’s experts in treating shoulder instability.”
Frank Cammisa, M.D., Dr. Cammisa is a team physician for the New York Giants and a spine consultant for the NHL. Dr. Cammisa is also chief of the spine service at HSS and a professor of clinical orthopedic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.
Dr. Cammisa was recommended anonymously, “Dr. Cammisa is chief of spine at HSS. He serves as a spine consultant for many sports teams.”
Daniel Cooper, M.D., Dr. Cooper is the head team physician for the Dallas Cowboys, and has been a team physician in professional sports for more than 30 combined seasons.
Dr. Cooper was recommended anonymously, “Dr. Cooper is the Dallas Cowboys physician. He is a leading expert for knee surgery and knee ligament reconstruction.”
Bryan Kelly, M.D., Dr. Kelly is an assistant team physician for the New York Giants, consultant for the New York Red Bulls, and head team physician for the New York Rangers. He is the chief of the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service and co-director of the Center for Hip Preservation at HSS.
Dr. Kelly was recommended anonymously, “Dr. Kelly is the chief of sports medicine at HSS and a hip arthroscopy pioneer. He is arguably the best hip surgeon in the world”
Matthew Matava, M.D., President of the NFLPS, is chief of the sports medicine service, and a professor of orthopedic surgery and physical therapy at the Washington University of Medicine in St. Louis. He also serves as the head team doctor for the St Louis Rams, orthopedic surgeon for the St Louis Blues and head of Sports Medicine at Washington University.
Dr. Matava was recommended by Dr. David Geier who commended Dr. Matava for his work with the St. Louis Rams, his position as President of the NFL Physicians Society, and his work at the Washington University of Medicine in St. Louis. Said Dr. Geier, Dr. Matava is a “terrific knee surgeon – specializes in knee surgery from complex multiligament reconstructions to more straightforward meniscus and ACL surgeries.”
Matthew Provencher, M.D., Dr. Provencher is the medical director of the New England Patriots and chief of the sports medicine service at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is also a visiting professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston, and Professor of Surgery at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
Dr. Provencher was recommended anonymously.
Russell Warren, M.D., Dr. Warren is the head team physician for the New York Giants, and has been with the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) since 1977. He is an attending surgeon at HSS and a professor of orthopedic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.
