Arthur C. Rettig Award for Academic Excellence Given
For Research on ACL Injuries
(Indianapolis, IN) March 7, 2017– The NFL Physicians Society has awarded Dr. Timothy McAdams, the head team physician for the San Francisco 49ers, the Arthur C. Rettig Award for Academic Excellence. The award is given annually to an NFL team physician for academic excellence in research in advancing the health and safety of players in the NFL.
Dr. McAdams presented his research at the NFLPS scientific meeting during the 2017 NFL Combine. The study, titled “Video Analysis of ACL Injuries in the National Football League,” looked at video of ACL injuries from three past NFL seasons to determine the mechanism of injury and pave the way for ACL injury prevention programs in the NFL. The paper was co-authored by NFL team physicians Scott A. Rodeo, M.D. of the New York Giants and Neal El Attrache, M.D. of the Los Angeles Rams as well as Jeffrey Johnson, M.D., Robert Brophy, M.D., David Schub, M.D., Matthew Matava, M.D., Holly Silvers, M.D., Brian Cole, M.D., and Bert Mandelbaum, M.D.
“I am proud and honored to receive this prestigious award and be recognized by my peers,” McAdams said. “My hope for the future is that through the efforts of NFL team physician research we can continue to investigate ways to make the great game of football as safe as possible through injury prevention programs,” said McAdams.
The NFL Physicians Society’s mission is to provide excellence in the medical and surgical care of the athletes in the NFL and to provide direction and support for the athletic trainers in charge of the care for these athletes.
Last year’s winner was Dr. Daniel E. Cooper of the Dallas Cowboys. The award is given annually to an NFL team physician for their outstanding research.
