NFLPS’ Robert Brophy, MD Selected For Prestigious Traveling Fellowship Award

The NFL Physicians Society (NFLPS) today applauded the selection of member Robert Brophy, MD, orthopedic surgeon for the St Louis Rams, who was selected for an American-British-Canadian (ABC) Traveling Fellowship by the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA). For five weeks, from April 19 to May 22, 2015, he will tour orthopaedic centers from around the world, including the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, with the other ABC Traveling Fellows. “Considering the tradition of the ABC Traveling Fellowship, and the accomplishments and credentials of those who have completed this Fellowship in the past, I am honored and humbled to represent the Washington University Department of Orthopedic Surgery on the 2015 ABC Fellowship,” said Dr. Brophy.

Dr Brophy, who has worked with the St. Louis Rams for the past eight years, also serves as an Associate Professor at Washington University (St. Louis) School of Medicine, Dr. Brophy earned undergraduate degrees in Economics and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, where he played on the men’s soccer team, earning All Conference Honors during his senior season.  He completed a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering at Stanford University and played for two national championship teams in the United Soccer League (1992 and 1996) before enrolling in medical school at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He received numerous academic awards during medical school, including Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor society recognition, before entering orthopedic surgery residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY.  He stayed at the Hospital for Special Surgery for a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery, and worked as a medical assistant with the New York Giants (NFL) and New York Red Bulls (MLS).

Upon graduation, he returned to the Washington University School of Medicine to join the division of sports medicine in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery with a clinical focus on shoulder and knee injuries. He also serves as a medical research consultant for Major League Soccer (MLS), and has worked with the St. Louis Blues (NHL), the St. Louis Athletica (WPS), and the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL).

The ABC Traveling Fellowship began in 1948, and was developed by Dr. Robert I. Harris of Toronto, Canada, who was the current president of the AOA.Other past recipients of this prestigious fellowship include NFLPS members, New England Patriots head physician, Dr. Matthew  T. Provencher as well as the San Francisco 49ers’ Dr. William J. Maloney (49ers) .
