Two members of the NFL Physicians Society (NFLPS) were named in the prestigiousOrthopedics This Week’s list of top shoulder surgeons, “20 of the Top North American Shoulder Surgeons: 2015.” James P. Bradley, M.D., M.S., head orthopedic surgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Matthew T. Provencher, M.D., head team physician for the New England Patriotswere chosen for “making news for their innovation, leadership, and clinical excellence” within the field of shoulder surgery.

“Congratulations to my NFLPS colleagues on their impressive accomplishment of being named one of the top shoulder surgeons of 2015. It’s a great honor to have them as part of the NFLPS team,” said Robert A. Heyer, M.D., president of the NFLPS and Carolina Panthers’ team physician.

Below are brief overviews of Drs. Bradley and Provencher including praise from other leading surgeons and physicians, as it appeared in Orthopedics This Week’s article, “20 of the Top North American Shoulder Surgeons: 2015”:

James P. Bradley is a sports medicine specialist with Burke & Bradley Orthopedics at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is also Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. “He has done extensive research and has great surgical experience regarding shoulder instability in athletes…especially posterior instability in contact athletes.”

Matthew T. Provencher is Chief of the Sports Medicine Service at the Massachusetts General Hospital and a Visiting Professor at Harvard Medical School, Professor of Surgery at USUHS, and a Captain (Select) in the Navy Reserves.  “Dr. Provencher is an exceptional shoulder surgeon and arthroscopist, a nationally recognized expert in the care of shoulder problems in both athletes and elite special ops military personal, and a preeminent leader in the research currently being done on shoulder instability complicated by bone loss.”

About the NFLPS: The NFL Physicians Society (NFLPS), an organization made up of over 150 team doctors from each of the 32 NFL teams, was founded in 1966. Its mission is to provide excellence in the medical and surgical care of the athletes in the NFL and to provide direction and support for the athletic trainers in charge of the care for these athletes.
