Orthopedic Surgeon and Leader in Sports Medicine Recognized for Dedication to Patients On and Off the Field

PITTSBURGH, PA (March 5, 2016) The National Football League Physicians Society (NFLPS) is proud of its former President, Dr. James P. Bradley, MD, who was awarded the prestigious 2015 Ralph C. Wilde Leadership Award by the Allegheny County Medical Society Foundation (ACMSF) with during its annual community awards and fundraising gala at Heinz Field.

The Ralph C. Wilde Leadership Award recognizes a physician who demonstrates exceptional skill in their clinical care of patients and dedication to the ideals of the medical profession as a teacher or profession leader.

Dr. Bradley has been the Head Team Orthopedic Surgeon of the Pittsburgh Steelers for 26years. He has worked closely with the NFL and, as former President, serves on the Board of the NFL Physicians Society. Dr. Bradley has successfully treated thousands of athletes over his career and has played a significant role in the lives and careers of the NFL’s most spectacular players.

“For the past quarter century, the Pittsburgh Steelers Football Club has been fortunate to be serviced by one of the finest orthopedic consultants in the business,” says John Norwig, M.Ed., ATC, Head Athletic Trainer, Pittsburgh Steelers. “Caring for professional athletes can be challenging; many times you are not only treating the athlete, but those who manage him. Dr. Bradley navigates these obstacles through expertise and a genuine care for the athlete. He is respected and appreciated by athletes, agents, team administrators and coaches,” concluded Norwig.

“I am honored and humbled to be receiving this award tonight. I have been an orthopedic surgeon in Allegheny County for 28 years. It’s my home. And it is a privilege to take care of my friends, my neighbors, Steelers athletes and the staff,” said Dr. Bradley as he accepted the award.

“I also want to thank my partners and fellow team physicians here tonight as well as John Norwig. We are a medical team and I am proud to stand here tonight accepting this award — and accepting it on behalf of all of them as well as they are as much a part ofthis as I am,” said Dr. Bradley.
Dr. Bradley is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, theAmerican Orthopedic Association, the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, the Pennsylvania Orthopedic Society, the Twentieth-Century Orthopedic Association, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, of which he is also a board member.

Dr. Bradley is a globally recognized Board Certified Orthopedic surgeon and leader in sports medicine research and treatments. He completed his medical school training at Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1982. He was then accepted into the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s residency program for Orthopedic Surgery. Upon the completion of his residency, he was accepted into the renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles for a Sports Medicine Fellowship.

An educator and innovator, Dr. Bradley has contributed advancements in surgical techniques and patents for medical devices. He continues to support sports medicine education and research currently as a Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Dr. Bradley has been published in 150 peer-reviewed articles for medical journals, 50 medical textbook chapters, and has fulfilled over 400 guest-lecture and grand round presentations combined. He also has videos that are featured on the VuMedi website, which has a large number of surgical videos that, surgeons in training use to learn and educate themselves of proper surgical techniques and gain valuable experience.

Dr. Bradley and his wife, Bea, reside in Fox Chapel. They have one daughter, Callee.
